At Mount Totumas Cloud Forest we offer a variety of accomodations and packages depending on guests preferences and budget. All of our accommodations have electricity, hot water, linens and towels, internet and open decks and common living area. The Bellbird Lodge is open to all our guests regardless of which accomodation they choose.
The Bellbird Lodge is perched on a ridge top overlooking the canopy of primary forest with sweeping views of La Amistad National Park. The design of the lodge was envisioned with large wrap around windows to allow guests to enjoy wide open views of the forest from many angles. In the living room accordian french doors open to the deck, perfect for wildlife observation and star gazing at night.
Suites and rooms are designed to provide each guest a private luxurious space. Private bathrooms have large skylights and planters to create a garden space in your room.
The trails into the cloud forest start from the front door of the lodge. The Cabin is of timber frame construction and of luxurious design, perfect for couples and small families. Complete kitchen facilities where guests have the option to prepare their own meals. Our most economical accomodation, the original farm house was renovated in 2012 and has three bedrooms, hummingbird viewing deck and complete kitchen. Private rooms with shared bath and kitchen. Living room with wood burning stove and library. Cozy.
Chef Alma brings her expertise in asian and european cuisine and creates dishes that have the power to pull guests away from the views out the window. Our gardens and greenhouse are increasingly contributing fresh organic produce for our kitchen. We are aslo experimenting with local wild fruits like salzamora, naranjillo y arbol de tomate and incorporating these into zesty sauces and deserts.
We create a limited set menu everyday and check with our guests before their arrival if there are any diet restrictions. In this way we can offer fresh wholesome meals focusing on what we grow and what the region has to offer. Sea level is only 35 kilometers away so we have access to fruits and vegetables that are locally grown and range from tropical to temperate.
There are 8 self-guided marked trails for guests to choose from that are described below in more detail. In addition we have guided trails to the peak of Mount Totumas as well as to remote areas in La Amistad National Park. Guides are available for birdwatchers and for nature lovers. A guide will dramatically increase your chances of spotting wildlife. Trails are safe. We do share the forests with apex predators like the mountain lion and jaguar, but these elusive big cats are wary and stay away from people. A hiker who spots either of these magnficent creatures can consider themselves very lucky. All our trails are loop trails except La Amistad which connects Mount Totumas Cloud Forest with the main trail in La Amistad National Park.
