Panama City : Chagres Challenge

The Chagres Challenge is a full day jungle expedition with much more than rafting. The white water rafting part is characterized by currents alternating with backwaters and is considered as Class II / Class III by the International Classification of River Navigation. As a result of dense tropical forest that covers the basin of the river, sedimentation is minimum; therefore, clear water can be expected very often. Although the Chagres Area is the natural habitat of big mammals such as tapir and jaguar, they are rarely spotted. It is much easier to see monkeys (spider, howler, whiteface capuchin , Geoffrey's Tamarin), sloths, river otters, iguans, tucans, and plenty of fish.
The Chagres Challenge begins at 5:00am in your Panama City Hotel. In a 4x4 you will be taken to a remote village called San Cristobal for a light breakfast. You will then hike for approximately 1.5 hours on a narrow and sometimes muddy trail that takes you deep into the jungle to an afluent of the Chagres River - Rio Piedras. At aproximatelly 11:00am you will start an exciting five hour rafting tour on the Chagres River, all the way to Madden Lake, reaching it around 4:30pm. You will have a fine lunch served somewhere along Chagres River. Close to Madden Lake, you will be met by Embera Indians and your rafts will be towed by an outboard motorboat, for the last half hour to reach the nearest road. After the tour, transfer back to your Panama City Hotel will be provided.
