COLON PROVINCE

The Colon Province is located in the northwest of Panama City and borders the Caribbean Sea. The Province’s capital and Panama’s third city is Colon, Caribbean port to the Panama Canal and base of the biggest trade free zone of the western hemisphere. One of the province’s main attractions is the artificial Gatun Lake, a unique ecosystem and part of the Panama Canal. In the historic city of Portobelo the ruins of Spanish fortresses and churches can be visited.

Gatun Lake
The Gatun Lake is a large artificial lake that forms a major part of the Panama Canal, carrying ships for 33 km of their transit across the Isthmus of Panama. At the time it was created, Gatun Lake was the largest man-made lake in the world. Around the lake there are various resorts that offer boat tours on the lake as well as excursions to islands and the Embera Indians. The exuberant vegetation at Gatun Lake is also a paradise for an abundance of bird species.
